LONDON -- Appium, one of the leading providers of next-generation telecommunications applications platforms, today announces critical benchmarking results with Sun Microsystems’ Sun Fire™ T1000 and T2000 servers. Demonstrating an outstanding increase in the capacity required to support the growing networks of operators, the results from the benchmarking demonstrate Appium’s ability to facilitate high capacity and performance voice and data services.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) benchmark test of the Appium-XWay™ telecom application server -- conducted on the UltraSPARC® T1 processor platform and running the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (OS) -- was to provide SIP performance results using industry-standard test procedures for Appium-XWay. Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers with breakthrough CoolThreads™ technology were used during the tests.

For telecoms operators worldwide these results translate into the increased possibility to offer high capacity revenue generating services to its customers. They also offer operators significant capital and operational cost savings due to performance and power optimization alongside reduced data centre rack space and support costs.

“Performance is critical to carriers as the demands of new multimedia technologies increase,” said Darrell Jordan Smith, Vice President, Communication Industry for Sun Microsystems. “By combining our latest technologies with Appium’s powerful java SIP implementation for telecom, carriers can start to realize the benefits of high performance, highly scalable telecom services. These innovations will continue to drive cost reductions throughout the data centre for years to come.”

Eric Lundquist, CEO of Appium, commented, “The numbers that Appium has achieved in these benchmarking tests are quite unique. In theory, these results prove that the same configuration of Appium-XWay used in these tests could support all the telecommunications traffic in a mid sized country.”
