CHELSMFORD, U.K. -- Global Marine Systems Limited (Global Marine) and its Chinese joint venture partner, SB Submarine Systems (SBSS), have completed the cable installation project for TransTeleCom, a leading backbone telecommunications operator in Russia. Once the cable has been deemed ready for service, it will provide vital telecoms connectivity for business communications services in the Tatar Strait region.

TransTeleCom is benefiting from a rapid and highly professional installation using a Global Marine-led project team and the SBSS’s cable ship, CS Fu-Hai. The team has already installed a 200 kilometre cable between Sovetskaya Gavan, on the Russian mainland to Ilinskij, on Sakhalin Island, located off the far east coast of Russia. After a competitive tender process, TransTeleCom selected Global Marine and SBSS on the basis of flexibility, proven ability and track record of installing systems in harsh environments. The Global Marine group of companies (Global Marine, SBSS and NTTWE Marine) are no strangers to working in this remote part of the world under severe climate conditions:

  • Global Marine successfully installed cable in the artic circle for the Svalbard Submarine Optical Fibre Transmission System project in 2004

  • Global Marine was also sub-contracted by Saipem in early 2005 to install a length of integrated power/telecom cable from the beach to a Tanker Loading Unit just off Sakhalin

  • In 2006 SBSS supported Saipem for seven months with the charter of the Fu Lai as a dive support vessel for Sakhalin Energy

This installation project has taken almost 8 weeks, the cable is now buried at a depth of 0.8 metres in sea depths of up to 650 metres, and the subsea equipment utilized in this project are the Sea Lion ROV and Jet Plough.

Alexander Panin, Senior Vice-Director, TransTelecom said, “With an ever growing demand for telecom services between Russian and Asia, the Sakhalin Island network is an integral piece of our countrywide telecoms infrastructure. Global Marine and SBSS impressed us with their technology and industry expertise and we were delighted working with them.”

Dick Borwick, Commercial Director, SBSS added, “This installation further illustrates the success of our partnership-based approach to work in this region. It is an important project for one of Russia’s biggest telecom operators and we hope to further develop our presence in what is a growing Russian telecoms market.”
