9:05 AM -- The 20,000-kilometer Asia America Gateway submarine cable that links Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Hong Kong, and the Philippines to the U.S. is ready to carry commercial traffic, one of its stakeholders, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) , announced this week.

The cable, which lands in Guam, Hawaii, and California on the Eastern side of the Pacific and has an initial capacity of 500 Gbit/s, also provides connectivity to "Australia, India, Europe, and even Africa via common landing points/countries along its route," PLDT noted in a statement.
