BURLINGTON, Mass. -- Acme Packet(TM) today announced that Telefonica International WholesaleServices is deploying Acme Packet's Net-Net(R) session border controllers todeliver its business voice-over-IP (VoIP) trunking services. TelefonicaWholesale manages all of Group Telefonica's voice, IP, data and capacitywholesale services worldwide. Its network extends more than 45,000 km acrossEurope, Latin America and the United States, providing access to 150international voice carriers.

Telefonica Wholesale's VoIP services enable its carrier customers to trunkbusiness voice traffic originating from enterprises or carrier circuit switchesto optimum PSTN termination points-of-presence around the world. The enterprisevoice traffic may be sourced from traditional TDM-based PBXs or IP PBX usingH.323 or SIP. The services are commercially available this quarter - Q4, 2005.

In delivering these VoIP services, Acme Packet's Net-Net session bordercontrollers serve to interconnect (peer) Telefonica Wholesale's VoIP networkwith those of its carrier customers. They support a comprehensive set ofsecurity functions including access control, network topology hiding and DoSprotection against both signaling and media attacks and overloads. The admissioncontrol, QoS marking/mapping and QoS reporting features are imperative forcompliance with both carrier and enterprise Service Level Agreements. Tomaximize service reach, the session border controllers mediate between privateoverlapping IP address spaces and dialing plans, providing basic, but critical,connectivity to both Telefonica Wholesale's customer carrier networks and theirconnected enterprises. Lastly, the Net-Net session border controllers areresponsible for optimized, least-cost routing of VoIP traffic.
