AlcaLu Gets Cheeky With Patent

11:10 AM -- Mindful of the importance of being regarded as a thought leader in the increasingly important managed services sector, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) has filed "the first two of a series of patent applications… relating to innovations in the delivery of Managed Services." (See ALcaLu Files Managed Services Patents.)

One covers an "Operational Competency Center (OCC) methodology for delivering managed network operations services."

The other (get ready) describes "a powerful new 'Bottoms-Up' operations cost estimation methodology" -- something that will clearly set AlcaLu apart in this field.

Some might say AlcaLu is being a bit cheeky with this application. Others, though, say it has rear-ended itself with this announcement.

On a serious note: Alcatel-Lucent is one of the leaders in the telecom managed services market, boasting more than 90 customers -- including Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Mumbai: BHARTIARTL), Germany's E-Plus Service GmbH & Co. KG , and Reliance Communications Ltd. -- and running networks that support more than 220 million subscribers. Its main rivals are, as usual, Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) and Nokia Networks .
