Leading Lights Cheat Sheet

10:30 AM -- Oh, alright, we'll give you one more week.

As you may have already read, the newest award in Light Reading's Leading Lights Awards program is causing quite a stir. (See Turn On Your Leading Light and Reader's Choice Rules.) And, judging by the near-panic phone calls we got Friday afternoon, we'd be silly billies not to allow ONE MORE WEEK for write-in nominations for Light Reading's Person of the Year award.

So, for the Reader's Choice Person of the Year Award, here are the important dates:

  • August 17: Write-in nominations for Leading Lights Person of the Year close at 6:00 p.m. ET. If you submit a nominee at 6:01 p.m. ET, we won't know, because that day falls on a Friday, and most weeks we're half in the bag by that point.
  • August 18 through August 26: Light Reading's editors sift through the nominees, picking out the obvious howlers. (Bart Simpson, for instance, is not going to be our Person of the Year.) We'll also spend this time writing a report that profiles the shortlisted nominees.
  • August 27: The Person of the Year poll opens so readers can vote on which shortlisted nominee (as profiled by our editorial staff) they think should get the Big Prize. The poll results will be a closely guarded secret until the evening of November 13, at which point we won't be able to shut up about it.
  • October 9: This is the day each year where we vow to eat healthier food and switch to light beer. Never really works out, though.
  • November 13: The Leading Lights Awards will be announced at the Heavy Reading 2007 Executive Summit Gala Dinner, which will take place in New York City.

For all other Leading Lights Awards categories -- Best Investment Potential (public company), Best New Product (one each for both public and private company), Best New Service (both public and private company), Best Marketing (both public and private company), Best M&A Strategy (public company), and Top IPO or M&A Candidate (private company) -- here are the important dates:

  • September 28: This is the deadline for all Leading Lights Award nominations (except Person of the Year).
  • October 19: This is the date all finalists for all Leading Lights categories will be announced (except Person of the Year).
  • November 1: Phil goes through his annual hand-wringing about whether he should finally break down and buy a really nice tux for the awards show, or just keep renting the ones from the bridal shop that make him look like the guitar player for a ska band.
  • November 13: The Leading Lights Awards will be announced at the Heavy Reading 2007 Executive Summit Gala Dinner, which will take place in New York City.

Submit your nominees for all awards right here.

Good luck!

— Phil Harvey, Managing Editor of the Year, Light Reading
