Google's Twitter Killer?

11:10 AM -- Rumors that Google will add a new social feature to Gmail today are flying around the Web.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the new feature will allow users to update their statuses. Gmail already allows users to post statuses through its Chat element, but this new feature will be more social, offering users a timeline view of their friends' status updates -- similar to the way Facebook and Twitter work.

Some are skeptical about whether this will make Gmail into a Twitter or Facebook killer, however. After all, Yahoo made a similar addition to Yahoo Mail last year without having much of an impact on those sites. And, as WSJ points out, "whether users will want to blend sending email with browsing friends' content is unclear."

Google is expected to make the big announcement today at 10 a.m., Pacific.

re: Google's Twitter Killer? Well, Google Buzz is now out. Looks like it is not a Twitter Killer.. but is designed to send Tweets to those on Twitter.

re: Google's Twitter Killer?

I don't think sending Twitter integration is its primary purpose. Facebook has Twitter integration too, but it's obviously a separate, competing service.

However, I think you're right in that it's not a Twitter killer. If anything, it competes more directly with Facebook, but even then, it seems too lackluster to really make a dent.
