Facebook 'Missed the Mark'

9:35 AM -- Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed users' privacy concerns and promised simpler privacy settings "in the coming weeks," in a column that appeared in The Washington Post today.

"Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark," Zuckerberg wrote.

However, many have pointed out that the column -- which reads like standard Facebook PR -- lacks any new information or actual apology. At least poor Zuck has Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and blogger Robert Scoble to defend him.

In other news:

  • CEO Steve Jobs will keynote Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 7 this year, Apple announced today. According to an email from Steve Jobs, posted on the MacRumors blog, we "won't be disappointed," in what he has to announce, which many suspect is the latest edition of the iPhone.

  • Internet retailer 6pm.com, owned by Internet retailer Zappos, accidentally screwed up its pricing on Friday, resulting in a loss of $1.6 million. The site says it will still honor all of the sales made during this time.

Mark Zuckerberg is a douche. He belongs up there with Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison when it comes to ego.

He didn't actually apologize. He just thinks we're stupid for not updating our settings every time they decide to change them. And he doesn't even mention or defend their publicly publishing your details.

Facebook privacy (or social networking privacy in general) is squarely in oxymoron land, isn't it?

    There are scarier things:

    http://www.spokeo.com/

It conveniently gathers everything about you from the Internet (that's right - Facebook included) and displays it.

Try viewing yourself on there and see what you find...

Its okay...my dad and I have the same name.  He shows up in Spokeo and I don't.  It also says that he has no kids.  So, I don't exist.  Good to know.  I guess I can not post here anymore....sob.

Wow -- I had no idea that I live in a $1 million-plus house that has no central heating. My children will be impressed. Wait a sec, I didn't know I HAD kids. I have learned a lot today.

More on Spokeo. Apparently I own a $1M+ home too. And I am not the father of my two kids. And I've been spelling my wife's first name incorrectly for mroe than a decade.  You'd think she would've corrected me by now. JB

Let's hope the IRS isn't using Spokeo data for audit purposes. That's a truly scary scenario.
