Euronews: Bids 'Imminent' for C&WW

Cable & Wireless Worldwide plc (London: CW), Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD) and Nokia Networks are in the avenues and alleyways of today's EMEA headline roundup.

  • A bid for Cable & Wireless Worldwide is expected imminently, reports City AM, with the smart money being on Tata Communications Ltd. . The deadline for bids is Thursday, but the other potential bidder, Vodafone, could face more scrutiny over its tax-cutting strategies if it is successful, explains journalist Robert Peston in his influential BBC blog. (See Euronews: Tata Considers C&WW Bid and Euronews: Vodafone Eyes M&A Opportunity.)

  • Nokia Siemems Networks has started handing out the redundancy notices at its Tampere plant in Finland, reports YLE. Around 100 jobs are going at Tampere, out of around 630 in the whole of Finland, as NSN implements its huge cost-cutting and restructuring plan. • MegaFon , the Russian mobile operator, is to borrow up to US$2 billion from a group of banks, reports Reuters, as it prepares to buy back a 25.1 percent stake owned by Altimo.

  • An advocacy group in Nigeria is unhappy about government plans to establish a state-owned National Communications Satellite Corporation, reports the country's Daily Times, as it feels it will undermine the telecom regulator and be in competition with companies it has issued licenses to.

  • Virgin Media Inc. (Nasdaq: VMED) has got itself into trouble with the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) for alluding a little too obviously to the broadcaster's iconic Doctor Who program/character/worldwide überbrand in an ad for its TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO)-powered cable TV service, reports Metro. The ad, now pulled, starred the former Doctor Who actor, David Tennant, though as any right-thinking individual will tell you, Tom Baker is the real Doctor. I think you can make a good argument that David Tennant was the best doctor. But yeah, Tom Baker was the real doctor.

David Tennant did his best to be crazed, but wasn't quite crazed enough.

    Tom Baker was crazed enough.

I'd agree. We're not being very controversial, are we? Might be the time to mention that I actually liked Peter Davison.
