  • The trend for European operators to maintain and/or strengthen their presence in Latin America continues today with news that Telecom Italia wants to boost its stake in Telecom Argentina. Reuters reports that the Italian incumbent has agreed to increase its 50 percent stake in Sofora, a holding company that controls the Argentine carrier (for an undisclosed sum), but needs government clearance to do so.

  • Just in time for the seasonal grey August weather, Amazon has given the Brits their own Kindle store. (See UK Gets a Kindle Store.)

  • Visa Europe says it is launching Europe's first microSD-based mobile payment system with Turkish bank Akbank and DeviceFidelity. The aim is to enable many more mobile phone users to make mobile payments using the memory card slots in their devices. DeviceFidelity has developed a smartcard, incorporating Visa's technology, that fits into the memory slot and enables Akbank customers to make payments using their mobile phones.
