BONN, Germany -- Deutsche Telekom will be showcasing new solutions for energy providers, meter operators and the housing sector at E-world 2011 in Essen. At stand 7-111 (hall 7), the company will be presenting its smart metering platform across 300 square meters together with its smart grid for the power network of the future and forward-looking smart home applications. Customers and partners will report on their experiences each day at the stand.

The smart metering solution collects data from electronic meters, transmits it via Internet protocol in Telekom's network and prepares it according to customer wishes. What's special about the solution is that it is based on an open standard and exchanges data with over 60 electronic meters made by 20 manufacturers - in line with nationally and internationally recognized security standards, such as ISO 27001. This also makes the introduction of variable rates child's play as the system simply activates the new rates on electronic meters as instructed by the energy provider. Telekom sells this service at a fixed monthly price per connection and number of transactions. Customers share the computing infrastructure (cloud computing). Telekom pays the costs for network connection and an additional communications box in advance.

Telekom develops smart grid solutions together with ABB: Energy providers will, where necessary, activate mini power stations in private households in the future in the event of power fluctuations (demand side management). Or, consumers decide, by pressing the eco button on their dishwasher, to use cheaper electricity rates at specific times (demand response management).
