Cisco in Translation

12:50 PM -- TelePresence could be getting instant language translation soon.
As part of a demo during the C-Scape analyst event today, Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) showed off a Carnegie Mellon University experiment translating one speaker's Spanish sentences into English.
The results are still research-level and, understandably, slow. On the other end of a TelePresence link, one speaker said his sentences in Spanish. After a long pause, TelePresence "spoke" the translated English, using that robotic computer voice.
Cisco admits the translation isn't word-for-word perfect, and the demo lasted for only a few short, scripted sentences. Interesting idea, though.
