Cable News: Dec. 16

Good morning, cable guys and cable girls. Today in Light Reading Cable news Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) may be going everywhere with Facebook , Dish Network LLC (Nasdaq: DISH) flashes some 3DTV, and AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) takes some heat for plying Federal Communications Commission (FCC) staffers with cupcakes.

  • Time Warner Cable may turn to Facebook to jump-start its TV Everywhere (TVE) strategy. The Wall Street Journal says the MSO is looking into ways to let subscribers use their Facebook log-ins to determine which online video from their cable subscriptions that they should be allowed to access.   • Joining DirecTV Group Inc. (NYSE: DTV), Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), and other pay-TV providers carrying 3D programming, Dish Network says it'll carry its first batch of 3D movies this month. Subscribers will need a ViP 922 HD DVR to watch the 3D lineup delivered in 1080i resolution, including titles such as A Christmas Carol and Shrek Forever. (See CTAM Summit: 3DTV Is Poised to Pop.)

  • They’re calling it "Cupcake-gate" in D.C. As the FCC prepares to vote on net-neutrality rules next week, Public Knowledge is trying to cause a stir by distributing a list of 133 FCC officials that received a box of cupcakes from AT&T lobbyists. (See Groups Call for Real Net Neutrality .)

  • Former radio station owner Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) will be named the next chairman of the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, according to The Hill.

  • Mandating that the FCC regulate the volume of audio on commercials carried by TV stations and pay-TV providers, President Obama quietly signed into law the CALM Act, or Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation. How should viewers handle loud TV channels? The FCC says viewers should "first try reducing the volume by checking your television and remote control."   • Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), which is already receiving orders for 4 million iPads each month, reportedly expects orders for the iPad 2 to top 6 million units per month. (See Everyone's Mad About the iPad .)

  • Hoping to garner favor for its pending merger with NBC Universal , Comcast signed an agreement with five Asian American organizations to increase diversity in its workforce and to carry more Asian American programming. (See ACA: No Stopping Comcast-NBC Merger.)
