Muni WiFi Lives!
That's the sound of Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Covad Communications Inc. trying to defibrillate the Silicon Valley municipal WiFi project. You'll recall the idea was left for dead in September when no one would put up the money for it. (See Muni: The Hits Keep Coming.)
According to San Jose's Mercury News today, Cisco and Covad will unwire-up one square mile of downtown San Carlos starting in April. (That's up the peninsula on Highway 101, north of Redwood City.) The pilot will run for at least three months.
One catch: Covad doesn't appear to be sold on the idea of providing free wireless to everyone. But hey, it's a start.
