The company claims its Ethernet chips have a more accurate way of delivering IEEE 1588v2 timing information

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (VTSS), a leading provider of advanced IC solutions for Carrier and Enterprise networks, today unveiled VeriTime™, its patent-pending distributed timing technology that delivers the industry’s highest accuracy IEEE1588v2 timing for IP Edge networks. VeriTime is the industry’s only solution already widely adopted by major OEMs as a low-cost upgrade to meet 4G/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) requirements. The technology is featured in nearly a dozen Vitesse products, including Carrier Ethernet Switch Engines and SynchroPHY™ portfolio of 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GE), 10GE and 10GE OTN PHYs.
Cisco’s most recent Visual Networking Index (VNI) predicts a 26-fold increase in mobile traffic between 2010-2015, with mobile video accounting for over 60% of that traffic by 2015. Service providers must adopt new mobile access technologies such as TD-LTE and LTE-A to accommodate this massive traffic growth. To provide high bandwidth and broader radio coverage, these emerging access technologies rely on new stringent packet timing requirements. To address the issue, Heavy Reading forecasts IEEE1588v2 to become the most widely deployed packet synchronization standard worldwide, providing synchronization to over a million cell sites in live commercial service by the end of 2015.
“Sub-10 nanosecond accurate timing is essential for operation of TD-LTE and LTE-Advanced networks which will bring Gigabit broadband connectivity to mobile devices,” said Chris Nicoll, principal analyst, mobility at ACG Research. “Carriers now expect that IEEE1588v2 will become the de facto standard in 4G mobile networks, so network timing solutions must support this standard and be flexible enough to work over fiber, microwave and OTN connections. Vitesse continues to specifically address these important service provider needs with its VeriTime-enabled solutions.”
