SiFotonics announces PD1503, the world’s first commercial 10Gbps Ge/Si photodetector

WOBURN, Mass. -- SiFotonics Technologies Co., Ltd., a leading supplier of optical communications components based on the Silicon Photonics technology platform, announced PD1503, the world’s first commercially shipping 10Gbps Germanium (Ge) on Silicon (Si) photodetector (PD) for optical communications.
In today’s marketplace, commercially available optical communications PDs are fabricated using III-V materials. After considerable research and development effort, SiFotonics has now improved Ge PD performance to commercial mass production quality, with performance comparable to commercial III-V PDs.
“In the world of cloud computing, 10 Gbps is the predominant transfer rate for data center applications. The introduction of Sifotonics PD1503 to the marketplace, based on SiFotonics advanced Ge-Si technology, offers a significant cost reduction compared to conventional III-V PDs. SiFotonics PD1503 supports both 850 and 1310nm wavelengths in a single device, which not only supports data center applications, but also facilitates 10Gbps optical solutions for the greater consumer market”, said Dr. Dong Pan, CEO of SiFotonics.
