Upskill U on Security in Virtualized Networks

Identifying security solutions for cloud platforms means unraveling complex financial, technical and skill set barriers for both service providers and enterprises.

Today at 1:00 p.m. ET, Upskill U is tackling security in the cloud during the course "Assuring Security in a Cloud-Based NFVi," presented by Patrick Donegan, chief analyst at Heavy Reading. (Register for Assuring Security in a Cloud-Based NFVi.)

Separating a software-based network function from its known hardware execution environment and running it in a relatively unknown cloud environment can be a scary proposition, introducing potential new security vulnerabilities and a rapidly changing environment to secure. Assembling and orchestrating all the right security components to provide virtual network functions (VNFs) and their underlying execution environments with the right level of security is a large challenge. During this course, Donegan will discuss ways of ensuring that security is preserved in the NFV environment and the security orchestration and other technologies needed for virtual networks.

Last Friday, Chris McReynolds, vice president of cloud and data services at Level 3 Communications Inc. (NYSE: LVLT), led the course "Ethernet & the Cloud" at Upskill U. In addition to covering the cost and bandwidth benefits of using Ethernet to power cloud services, McReynolds discussed challenges enterprises face in the move to hybrid clouds and reviewed common hybridization use cases for enterprises. (Listen to Assuring Security in a Cloud-Based NFVi.)

"If you look at the number of enterprises that have a hybrid cloud strategy, that's up to 82% now. I remember looking at that a couple of years ago, that was in the 30% to 40% range... it's rapid adoption. We're definitely beyond early adopters and it's mainstream now."

Starting Wednesday, Upskill U will launch a new four-part series on Analytics & Big Data. This series will look at how the move to virtualized networks is shaping analytics, how service providers can use analytics to strengthen security measures, the impact of analytics on the customer experience and strategies for reaping the benefits of big data delivered by IoT.

Don't miss the Analytics & Big Data module:

And because we know you love IoT, don't miss a special bonus class, "IoT: Tackling the Security Challenge" on Thursday, June 23, 1:00 p.m. ET with Jason Porter, vice president of security solutions at AT&T Solutions .

At Upskill U, our lights are always on for learning and our live sessions are recorded so you can revisit courses anytime. I'll see you at 1:00 p.m. ET on the chat boards!
