2024 was another year when it seemed like every company in the telecom industry suffered from a hack.

Indeed, a recent report from Nokia shows that cyberattacks on telecom infrastructure are growing exponentially. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) traffic, for example, increased a whopping 166% between June 2023 and June 2024. And in many networks such attacks are becoming more frequent, growing from just one or two a day to "well over 100 per day," according to Nokia.

Then in October, coincidentally the same month Nokia released its report, Salt Typhoon arrived. Widely viewed as the biggest hack ever, Chinese spies appear to have broken into US telecom networks operated by the likes of AT&T and Verizon, giving them the ability to listen in on Americans' calls and read their texts.
