SeaChange Buys Liberate European Unit

Say goodbye to the rest of Liberate Technologies, the once high-flying interactive TV software pioneer. SeaChange International announced a deal earlier today to buy Liberate's European operations for $25.5 million. In Europe, Liberate supplies interactive TV software for three major cable operators--NTL, Telewest and UPC. Under the agreement, SeaChange will take over those contracts as well as Liberate's license agreements, patents and other intellectual property. SeaChange also plans to retain about 20 of Liberate's London and San Mateo, CA employees. Just three months ago, Liberate sold its North American assets to Double C Technologies, a joint venture of Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications, for about $82 million in cash. Comcast will be the majority partner of that venture, which recently closed its deal with Liberate.
