LONDON -- Metaswitch has partnered with TeleStax, Inc., to jointly offer the RestComm application server with Project Clearwater, Metaswitch’s open-source IMS-in-the-cloud platform.

RestComm is designed to engage mainstream Web and mobile app developers so they can build applications that leverage core telco network assets to enrich user experiences with voice, video and messaging. It exposes APIs identical to those of Twilio, so developers familiar with that environment are immediately at home with RestComm. It is part of the Mobicents open-source community of telecom middleware projects, which was founded by TeleStax in 2003. RestComm runs atop Project Clearwater, a scalable, flexible, open-source SIP communications engine that can be a key building block for carriers wanting to deliver voice, video and messaging services.

The margins for basic telco voice and SMS services are shrinking and, at the same time, several over-the-top Internet competitors are capturing revenues and subscribers for IP-based communications services. As this is happening, telcos are seeing the need to become more innovative and they’re becoming aware that application developers are critical to their growth and profitability.

RestComm and Project Clearwater are both designed from the ground up to run in cloud environments, an important step in the telecom industry’s move toward Network Function Virtualization (NFV), which embraces building out networks and services using software appliances running on commercial-off-the-shelf server and switching hardware.
