SBC Communications Inc., the top U.S. DSL provider, said it is offering its FreedomLink WiFi service for $1.99 a month to its DSL customers. FreedomLink provides high-speed wireless LAN access at 3,900 locations nationwide. The bundle allows SBC customers to gain broadband Internet access whether at home or on the road, for as little as $29 a month. It's a smart move for SBC. Instead of trying to continually match cable's residential access speed increases, which it cannot, SBC has created a compelling mobile bundle that cable can't match. It is an offer that could make many road warriors think about swapping their cable modem connection for DSL. Without SBC DSL, FreedomLink is priced at $19.95 per month.
