SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics announced today the official launch of low water peak single-mode fiber, WidePassTM. This fiber is designed to reduce the attenuation around the water peak significantly, thereby enabling optical transmission in the E-band (1360 ~1460 nm).

The product opens up the window for network designers to use more channels in a flexible manner in their optical networks and also allows for implementing cost-effective coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology for current or future network applications.

Supported by exceptional optical fiber manufacturing technology from Samsung Electronics, WidePassTM fiber retains the outstanding optical and geometrical properties found in the company’s conventional single-mode fiber including several world records in currently unbeaten optical and geometrical performance specifications. Additionally, it features excellent long-term reliability against hydrogen exposure during the entire lifetime of the cabled fiber, which is actually the best-in-its-class.

According to Byeong-Bok Jeon, Vice President and General Manager of the Samsung Fiberoptics Division, “adding low water peak fiber in the current stage to our optical fiber portfolio allows us to satisfy customer needs better. We will be able to provide customers with the best quality optical fiber available in the industry at a competitive price.”

And Ferdi Schank, Director Fiber Optics at Samsung Telecommunication Europe comments “This relevant extension of our product range proves Samsung’s strong will and commitment to ultimately reach a similar leading role in the international FO business as it enjoys domestically since several years already.”

Demand for low water peak fiber, which already has broad applications in metropolitan and access networks worldwide, is rapidly spreading, particularly led by developed countries. WidePassTM fiber fully complies with and exceeds in many respects ITU-T G.652.C/D specifications and other major industry standards.

Samsung’s WidePassTM fiber will go into full mass production in June for worldwide export.
