Salaries Still on the Rise

The economy may be taking a nose-dive, but Light Reading readers taking the Salary Survey are optimistic that they’ll continue to see gains in their paychecks.

More than 1400 people have already taken this month’s Light Work poll, with the majority of those responding reporting that they make somewhere between $70,000 and $130,000 a year. Last year, when the economy was flying high, a quarter of the respondents' salaries increased more than 20 percent. Another quarter say their salaries increased between 10 and 20 percent.

So what’s the outlook this year, as companies like JDS Uniphase Inc. (Nasdaq: JDSU; Toronto: JDU) and Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE/Toronto: NT) slash thousands of jobs (see Nortel Warns of Shortfall, More Layoffs)? Surprisingly, people are optimistic that their paychecks will continue to grow. But just how much they expect them to increase has changed. Only 5 percent say they expect an increase of 20 percent or more, with the majority of respondents expecting increases between 5 and 10 percent.
