Run From Pirates

3:00 PM -- So a hedge fund named Pirate Capital has been making the headlines lately because it has run into trouble with the SEC, and now it is apparently experiencing a staff exodus.

Pirate Capital. Hmmmm. Let's see: It's in trouble with the law. Folks are jumping ship. Har. Naw, that's just too easy.

Is it just me, or is Pirate Capital the dumbest possible name for an investment company? Kind of asking for trouble, aren't you?

Why not start an investment fund called Rape, Pillage, and Steal LLC?

ARRRGH!

re: Run From Pirates Maybe Pirate will merge with the much-maligned Amaranth, the place where a gas trader recently lost $6B in one month. Just think, the combination of corporate raiders and renegade overleveraged commodity traders from Calgary could really do some damage.

Amaranth is another apropos name. Wikipedia tells us of this ancient whole grain:

"Amaranth was used in several Aztec ceremonies, where images of their gods ... were made with amaranth mixed with honey. The images were cut to be eaten by the people."

Sounds similar to the end of Amaranth Advisors, no?

re: Run From Pirates Good point.

Maybe Pirate will merge with the much-maligned Amaranth, the place where a gas trader recently lost $6B in one month. Just think, the combination of corporate raiders and renegade overleveraged commodity traders from Calgary could really do some damage.

Au contraire, perhaps the captains of this ship should be commended for earnestly embodying the ethics of Regulation FD by choosing a corporate name that so accurately reflects their modus operandi. ;)

re: Run From Pirates Holy cow, is this the real Rex Tanright?

Rex, I've been wondering where you went...

re: Run From Pirates It's not the fund name, my friend. It's the man behind the name. Or, more precisely, what's behind the man behind the name. In this case?
Pirate Capital = Thomas Hudson Jr. = Nervy fuck. (I swear, those guys are like cockroaches.)
