Rumor: iPhone's Coming to Verizon

SAN FRANCISCO -- CTIA ENTERPRISE & APPLICATIONS 2010 -- Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) is preparing a CDMA iPhone for Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) to sell next year, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal today.

Citing anonymous sources, the paper says the phone will be similar to the iPhone 4 but will have a CDMA chip inside, made by Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM), of course.

The Journal also reports that Apple's fifth-generation iPhone is in development, and that it will have a different form factor. We're rooting for a plush hexagon.

It's a good-news/bad-news day for the iPhone, as Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) sued Apple today over 18 patents, citing improper usage in iPhones, iPads, and other products. (See Motorola Sues Apple.)

Say it enough times and it'll be true eventually, right?  :)

Data point, take it or leave it: I've talked to someone at CTIA who's using Verizon Wireless and has been threatening to leave to get an iPhone. Their sales rep implored them not to do anything til January -- "I can't say why, just wait til January."

re: Rumor: iPhone's Coming to Verizon

Given the many other times the WSJ has reported that that a Verizon iPhone was just about to be launched and it didn't happen? Somewhere someone is benefiting from this rumor and the WSJ keeps rolling it out for them.

Lowell McAdam was asked about this and even he said: "This rolls around every few weeks doesn't it?"

He says that he hopes that Verizon will have an iPhone in the end and that LTE will encourage them to make one. My read is that we're talking 2012 maybe later. They'll need to integrate LTE, CDMA and WiFi with a multi-band radio to do a first-generation LTE phone, its a lot of work.

Another data point to take or leave: In the summer, I talked to an engineer who worked on an LTE cell site right by the Apple HQ

Re: Apple/LTE

That certainly seems possible, it doesn't follow from that Apple will launch a CDMA phone in January. Unless you expect it to have LTE onboard?

Okay

The WSJ has fleshed out its story, device is supposedly a CDMA-only phone. If that's the case I'd expect to see it on KDDI, maybe even Sprint too. Still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

So the Verizon iPhone would run slower than the AT&T version and it wouldn't be able to handle voice and data calls at the same time. Why would they do that? Would make much more sense for Verizon to hold off six months to a year and wait for an LTE model.

I still say we'll see an LTE iPad first.

The Wall Street Journal managed to get the rumor mill started again. On their website yesterday and in the print edition today, the paper reported on what is perhaps the longest running tech rumor: Verizon is getting the iPhone by the end of year.
