SAN FRANCISCO -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and RGB Networks today announced an agreement through which Motorola will market and support RGB’s video processing solutions for the all-digital transition to broadband video providers. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will also provide system integration support for RGB’s digital migration products.

Motorola and RGB will offer cable and telco operators networked video processing solutions based on RGB’s Video Intelligence Architecture™ (VIA™), enabling them to create efficient digital video networks that effectively manage, scale, and deliver advanced services. Leveraging standards-based, high-speed Gigabit Ethernet technology, RGB’s VIA solutions enhance and support key video applications including digital simulcast, Video On Demand and broadcast video delivery.

The first product to be offered through this agreement is the Simulcast Edge Processor (SEP), which provides the ability to derive an entire line-up of analog programming from a Gigabit Ethernet-delivered digital MPEG-2 multiplex. The SEP facilitates deeper penetration of digital content distribution by allowing analog signals to be generated at the edge of the network closer to the end-user, simplifying the network architecture and reducing operational costs for the operators.

Designed for high-density video decoding and modulation, the SEP simplifies and accelerates cable operators’ transition to all-digital networks. The SEP will debut at the 2005 National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) National Show April 3-5 in San Francisco, California.

The RGB Simulcast Edge Processor is the cable industry’s first complete solution for digital simulcast edge decoding applications, providing the capability to simultaneously receive multiple MPEG-2 digital video streams over Internet Protocol (IP), decode the video streams, modulate and up-convert them, and deliver the streams directly to subscribers as NTSC analog video at the edge of the network. The SEP is unique in that it combines all of the necessary processing required to accept digital video streams and deliver them directly as modulated analog NTSC video for distribution to customers’ homes in a single one rack unit platform.

The SEP enables cable operators to convert and carry all signals in digital format to the edge of the network, eliminating the bandwidth drain of transporting a dual analog/digital programming line-up and the cost of maintaining separate transmission and video processing equipment. With the SEP, cable operators can deliver a full digital line-up to digital subscribers, simplify operations, save bandwidth and pave the way to a fully digital network, while still supporting existing analog customers.
