Report Sees 10.9 Million WiMax Subs by 2009

Look out, everybody. Here comes WiMax. A new study by Pyramid Research predicts that WiMax "will revolutionize the fixed wireless broadband market," generating 10.9 million subscribers by 2009. The report says WiMax will largely be deployed by fixed carriers and ISPs to provide backhaul and deliver high-speed Internet access, with most using the current 802.16d standard. The report cautions, though, that the convergence of WiMax and cellular service won't happen for at least another two years. It says that such service convergence will have to wait until products based on the next WiMax standard, 802.16e, start coming to market in 2007.
