2022 in review: Russia vs. the world

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has helped to upend the planet's global order. It signaled intentions by Russia's Vladimir Putin to expand his country through any means necessary, including armed conflict. And it also sparked a swift and surprisingly cohesive reaction among Western countries intent on slowing or halting Russia's military ambitions.

For Ukrainians, the invasion has helped highlight the importance of resilient communications systems.

Broadly, in the telecom industry, the invasion has helped clarify an increasingly clear line between Western democracies and Russia, China and their allies. Specifically, Western companies like Ericsson, Cisco, Intel and Nokia are completing their exit from the Russian market, paving the way for Chinese vendors like Huawei and ZTE to potentially take their place. And though this geopolitical bifurcation has been bubbling across the global telecom industry for several years now, Russia's invasion of Ukraine helped further crystalize the situation.
