Reding's Latest Rumpus

3:50 PM -- Europe's Telecommunications Commissioner, Viviane Reding, sure knows how to cause a stink.

The European Commission 's new proposals for a new regulatory regime, including a centralized pan-European body similar to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) , have not gone down too well. (See EC Proposes Reforms and ETNO Lays Into EC.)

Naturally, her simultaneous proposal to get shot of a bunch of regulations has pleased national regulators and large carriers alike. (See EC Cuts Back Regulation.)

Some believe Reding is pushing her proposals to the limit, knowing she will be bargained down to a less radical set that will suit everyone. "This is mostly only a proposal and subject to ratification by member states, so plenty of room for change," points out the analyst team at Dresdner Kleinwort in a research note.

Reding has already made a name for herself as a watchdog with teeth. Let's see how big a bite she can take out of the major incumbents' rear ends this time. (See Reding Rattles Regulatory Saber and EU Adds Mobile Law.)
