Recycling FiOS

2:35 PM -- I learned today that FairPoint Communications Inc. is trialing IPTV over a Portsmouth, N.H., FTTH property they acquired from Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ). Good for them.

Unlike Verizon, FairPoint has decided that IPTV is the way to go over FTTH. They plan on evaluating this trial, and based on the results, may launch IPTV across multiple Northeast properties. They inherited approximately 24 FTTH communities with their recent purchase of Verizon territory. Most of these communities are in New Hampshire, but also include Maine.

If all goes well, it sounds like quite an ambitious undertaking. I hope FairPoint is up to the challenge. It won’t be an easy task, and, given FairPoint’s financial challenges of late, you wonder if they’re up to it. I’m certainly rooting for them. It will be a great story to tell if it succeeds. Small telco recycles behemoth telco network into IPTV success.

Stay tuned.
