Something's happening in Bell land again. Qwest Communications made it four-for-four earlier today, joining the larger Baby Bells in posting record or near-record DSL subscriber gains for the third quarter after slashing prices in recent months.
Qwest reported that it netted 150,000 data customers in the summer period, its strongest quarterly performance in at least a year and a half. The increase is more than double the 68,000 DSL subscribers that the Bell picked up in Q2 and easily surpasses the 102,000 subscribers that it added in the year-ago period. With the strong gain, Qwest boosted its total DSL customer count over the 1.3 million mark.
Like Verizon Communications, Qwest did not disclose how many satellite TV subscribers it signed up in Q3. But it disclose that it has now enlisted more than 95,000 DirecTV customers, placing it a distant fourth behind its much larger Bell brethren.
