Quake Hits China's Networks

2:25 PM -- As you'd expect, the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that has killed thousands in southwest China has also hit communications networks, making the already tough rescue and recovery operation even harder.

According to reports from the disaster zone, more than 3,000 China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL) base stations were affected, while China Unicom Ltd. (NYSE: CHU) has about 700 base stations out of action.

China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (NYSE: CHA)'s fixed-line network has, reportedly, only been affected near the earthquake's epicenter in Sichuan province, while China Netcom Corp. Ltd. (NYSE: CN; Hong Kong: 0906) reported disruption to IP transport connections, resulting in the loss of Internet access to some parts of the affected region.
