BEIJING and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- While vendors and carriers continue to struggle in so-called 'developed markets,' the telecom business is thriving in China. Yet few firms have stepped forward to serve this lucrative market according to analysts at Pyramid Research, a global telecommunications market research firm.China represents much more than merely the best opportunity in a weak market. "Analysis suggests China is the fastest growing market anywhere, anytime," according to Ross O'Brien, Pyramid's Asia Pacific Research Director. According to O'Brien:

  • More than 1.25 million cellular subscribers sign up in China every week.

  • Five years ago, one in ten Chinese citizens had a phone. Today, more than one in three have a telephone subscription. Five years from now, China’s telecommunications penetration will be nearly 75% -- some 950 million fixed and mobile connections, more than three times the entire population of the United States.

  • Over the next five years, China’s fixed and mobile telecom carriers plan to spend more on network infrastructure than all of Western Europe combined.

To help global telecom clients seize this opportunity, Pyramid has partnered with Beijing-based MFC Insight, the leading telecoms research group in mainland China.Clients will receive insight on the operations of Chinese carriers and vendors, joint venture opportunities, CAPEX projections and regulatory and political solutions, which constitutes the biggest barrier to entry. "China is a vital driver of the future telecoms market. Information technology-- or ‘informatization’ as it is known in China-- is seen to be the key plank for economic growth, and hence political stability," said Dr. Peter Lovelock, Director of MFC Insight."While China is becoming a cornerstone of successful global telecom business strategy, market entry carries substantial risk," warns O'Brien. "In a market moving as fast as China, street-level market intelligence and high-caliber analysis often spells the difference between success and failure."According to O'Brien, "Pyramid provides the most comprehensive view of international telecommunications service and equipment markets today. Our relationship with MFC Insight allows us to take clients even further down the path to profitability in China." The combination of Pyramid’s geographic breadth and emerging market strength combined with Insight’s local market presence and information depth has made for a solid and dynamic partnership.Pyramid Research
