Phil's Not-So-OFC/NFOEC Pictures

5:25 PM -- LOS ANGELES -- It's 65 degrees with a cloudless sky in the beginning of March. Just for a few minutes, I had the insane idea to skip a couple of meetings about optics in windowless rooms and answer that purely journalistic question: Hey, what's with all the cheerleaders and marching bands over there?

Please enjoy this quick romp through some scattered shots that we found while wiping the memory cards after last week's trip to OFC/NFOEC 2012. Click on the photo below to begin the slide show and use the arrows above each pic to navigate:

Glad to see that neither one of you went to a "major" university. Bass guitars have been around in basketball "pep" bands since way long ago when I (grandpa Internet) went to college. Of course our school had "the 'lectric" so our band didn't have to use the double bass featured in your school's basketball string quartet.

It's kind of hard to bring the marching band tubas into the basketball arena. Gets in the way of sight lines.

I'd also like to complain about the lack of photos of the PAC-12 CHAMPION COLORADO BUFFALOES. Such substandard reporting. Time to hire a sports editor.

Cheerleader photos are certainly not what we expected to get out of OFC/NFOEC...

I agree with you about the electric bass photo. College bands use electric bass now? Does this mean that guy had to check his bass *and* an amp?

Speaking of which. I was on the flight home with the Stanford band. At baggage claim, one group of luggage came out pretty quickly...... and then there was a long, long pause where nothing happened. Finally, the buzzer sounded at the Oversized Luggage window - and I came up with a theory: I think most of our luggage was stuck behind the band's bass drums.

I guess I was just too cool to hang out with the band at basketball games...

Come to think of it, our high school pep band had a keyboardist. But that was the 80s, so who knows if they do things like that any more.

Regarding our selection of college teams to feature, we thank you for your input. Our preference was to select teams on the basis of true moral fiber and general non-suckiness. This actually eliminated every non-California team (and USC, because, you know, they're USC). Having said that, we were flexible, and gave extra consideration to whoever was in front of Phil at the time. Except Colorado, because their representatives all ran and hid, fearing our media truthiness. Or, that's what unnamed and untraceable sources said, anyway.

It wouldn't have mattered. My interest in sports only came about right around the same time as my interest in gambling. Purely a coincidence, I'm sure.

In college I majored in smoking and wasting time. Now, fortunately, I've given up smoking and taken up photography. You can read into that whatever you wish.
