Palm's Emptying Pockets

5:45 PM -- Palm Inc. 's first-quarter loss will be no surprise to the many who have been watching the device maker's progress. Palm is still getting beaten up in the marketplace by larger rivals and cowed under the weight of one-time charges.

So, can the just-announced $99 Centro smartphone, due out this month, help revive the company fortunes? My sense is "no" -- at least not without an expansion of the Centro line.

As far as I can tell, the Centro will be a solid seller, but it's not generating user excitement like -- you guessed it -- the iPhone or even some of the newer BlackBerry releases.

Palm seems to agree, as it is now predicting a similarly dour second quarter.

The company is going to need to add more high-end models and add a touch of geek va-voom to get people really talking about -- and buying -- the Centro... and fast. — Dan Jones, Site Editor, Unstrung
