Deutsche Telekom's 'open RAN' plan slips after Huawei reprieve
Deutsche Telekom had promised 3,000 open RAN sites by the end of 2026, but the date has now been changed to 2027. And Germany's refusal to ban Huawei has implications.
TEOCO integrates its geolocation Mentor Sparks solution with ASSET, AIRCOM's radio network planning tool.

LEATHERHEAD, UK -- TEOCO, the leading provider of assurance, analytics and optimization solutions to communications service providers (CSPs), has today announced the next stage in its ongoing integration of AIRCOM solutions. TEOCO is integrating its market-leading geolocation Mentor Sparks solution with ASSET, AIRCOM’s proven radio network planning tool.
Mentor Sparks creates detailed, accurate geolocated traffic maps grouped into meaningful traffic profiles. It includes LTE optimization and SON use cases, and offers near-real-time and large-scale processing capabilities. The integration with ASSET means that these maps, tailored for radio planning, can be exported directly in to the planning tool at the click of a button.
Most geolocation tools focus on producing data for optimization purposes, and so lack the necessary analyses to meet radio planning needs. With the integration of these tools, the geolocated outputs from Mentor Sparks are perfectly aligned with ASSET for optimal network planning. For example, actual network traffic maps can be produced by Mentor and sent to ASSET, where they will help the automatic cell planning module choose the best small cells candidate locations to serve the expected traffic. Furthermore, Mentor Sparks can classify traffic as either being indoor or outdoor, adding a much-needed dimension to the process of planning. By using real-network traffic as the key input, a better plan is ensured and therefore a better ROI for the Operator.
“The sheer volume of radio access points in an LTE network means that operators need highly accurate data and reliable automated planning in order to meet their future network needs,” says Shachar Ebel, CTO, TEOCO. “The combination of ASSET and Mentor Sparks joins detailed measurement of network traffic based on consumer behavior and leverages it to plan the best and most cost efficient network possible.”
The seamless integration of Mentor Sparks and ASSET follows TEOCO’s acquisition of AIRCOM. The deal culminated in the creation of a global market leader with more than 300 CSP customers in over 100 countries.
