Cisco cofounder Len Bosack introduces XKL's metro optical networking system for the enterprise

REDMOND Wash. -- XKL, L.L.C. (www.XKL.com), a provider of network equipment, today announced the company’s official launch and general availability of the DXM optical transport system, which the company believes will change the way enterprises perceive metro area networking.

Led by Cisco Systems co-founder Len Bosack, XKL’s technology allows IT departments to bypass expensive external telecom carrier services by deploying and managing their own metro optical networks. The DXM offers unparalleled ease of deployment and management, while integrating flexible connectivity, powerful DWDM multiplexing and carrier class resiliency in a space and power-efficient package.

“We believe the DXM justifies the fixed cost of reaching fiber infrastructure that already exists in most metro areas”, says CEO Bosack. “Unlike fine wine, fiber in the ground does not improve with age. The DXM is ready to light it now, using skills that enterprises already have”.

XKL's architecture provides optical transport with an easy to use router-like management structure. This includes well-known standards such as a familiar command line interface, SNMP, and an independent TCP/IP management network. As a result, the DXM can be quickly deployed, scaled, and managed without employing trained optical engineers or bearing a large support contract. Simply install it in a rack, make the proper connections, and realize carrier-class optical transport.

"The DXM opens up a new target market for optical equipment - enterprises that can use an optical network, but don't know how to build and operate one. The DXM allows such enterprises to set up and operate an optical network in a fairly simple, easy-to-use, and cost-effective way", said Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst of Infonetics Research. "If enterprises respond positively, then it’s natural that carriers will want to consider using the product line as well."

XKL believes a typical customer could, with multiple gigabit Ethernet or high-speed SONET services between buildings, see bandwidth costs reduced 50 to 75 percent by utilizing the DXM optical transport system and taking advantage of an established fiber infrastructure. Furthermore, monthly recurring charges for the fiber should remain constant as bandwidth approaches half a terabit per second on a single fiber pair.
