Vendors Unveil ROADM Roadmaps

More than ever before, telecom network operators are in need of new technologies that can make their networks more financially and operationally efficient. So what are the optical sector's Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) system vendors doing to help?

A new special feature, Market Spotlight: ROADMs, published as part of Light Reading's Next-Generation ROADM Briefing Center, shows that the sector's leading players are all on top of the latest issues -- namely, the development of Colorless, Directionless, Contentionless, and Gridless capabilities -- that can make ROADMs more flexible and efficient.

"What's been deployed so far has limited flexibility…[Network operators would] like an optical network that is fully flexible, with add/drop nodes operated in an automated fashion," states Heavy Reading senior analyst Sterling Perrin.

What's notable, though, is that among the vendors featured, there are differing views on how important some of these capabilities are, how to approach them from a technology perspective, and indeed whether all these capabilities will ever be used in commercial carrier networks.

To find out what Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN), Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), Fujitsu Network Communications Inc. , Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , and Tellabs Inc. (Nasdaq: TLAB; Frankfurt: BTLA) already have in their ROADM arsenals, and what they're planning to bring to market, check out the seven-page special feature, Market Spotlight: ROADMs.
