Optical components

Software-Defined Optical Networks

10:45 AM -- Light Reading is heading to the ECOC Exhibition in Amsterdam next week (Sept. 17-19) and I'm pretty pumped about the discussions on the agenda in the Dutch capital.

Software-Defined Optical Networks, The Impact of Photonic Integration on Optical Networks, IP/Optical convergence, The Best Movie Ever Made -- these are just some of the topics being addressed during the Market Focus sessions in Hall 1 at the RAI exhibition center (though only three of those are officially on the agenda currently…)

There's also going to be a lot of deep diving into optical component and subsystem developments, as ECOC is essentially Europe's OFC/NFOEC, with many specialist vendors, along with some of the more familiar names -- ADVA Optical Networking , Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq: INFN), JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; Toronto: JDU), NEC Corp. (Tokyo: 6701), Oclaro Inc. (Nasdaq: OCLR) and many more -- participating in the show.

And there's a demo, hosted by the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) , of multi-vendor 100Gbit/s interoperability put together with the help of seven component suppliers -- Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (Nasdaq: AMCC), Avago Technologies Pte. , Inphi Corp. , Luxtera Inc. , Molex Inc. (Nasdaq: MOLX), Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC) and TE Connectivity (NYSE: TEL) -- and two test vendors, namely Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and Tektronix Inc. .

Keep an eye out for our coverage from the show. In the meantime, here's some pre-ECOC coverage:
