CANNES, France -- NeoPhotonics, a leading global supplier of fiber optic component and module solutions for long-haul, metro and FTTX networks, today announced that the company has become the market leader in MEMS-based VOA (variable optical attenuator) components, as illustrated by the recent shipment of the 100,000th VOA from LightConnect, its wholly owned subsidiary located in New ark, California.

NeoPhotonics made the announcement here at ECOC 2006 (European Conference on Optical Communications), where the company also introduced a new next-generation low loss “2-degree” Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (“ROADM,” see separate release) and where the company is showcasing the industry’s most complete portfolio of MEMS and PLC based optical solutions, including the new ROADM product, in booth # 165. Also on display is the company’s extensive line of transceiver products in SFF, SFP, XFP, X2 and XENPAK form factors.

The 100,000th VOA unit – an FVOA5000, one of the several types of VOAs offered by NeoPhotonics for a variety of applications – was shipped to a large optical system manufacturer in Europe. This major milestone also illustrates the company’s ability to meet surging market demand for these products, attributable to carrier requirements for a network infrastructure capable of supporting the rapid growth in broadband services. The company announced shipment of its 40,000th VOA just over one year ago.

“NeoPhotonics has established itself as the market leader for MEMS based VOAs and the LightConnect VOA has been shipping to major system vendors in North America, Europe, Japan and China for the past several years,” said Tim Jenks, CEO of NeoPhotonics. “This is further validation of our MEMS technology as a very reliable platform for VOA -- and we plan to leverage this technology further to satisfy the evolving requirements of metro and long-haul optical networks.”
