Nortel's 40G Euro Win

10:20 AM -- KPN Telecom NV (NYSE: KPN)'s Belgian operations (called KPN Belgium, funnily enough) will deploy Nortel Networks Ltd. 's "40G-ready" equipment to boost optical backbone capacity in the country.

The operator will use Nortel's common photonic layer platform and Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 products, from its Metro Ethernet Networks portfolio -- products that won't come from Nortel for much longer. (See KPN Deploys Nortel 40G.)

The contract win comes just a week after Nortel dropped the bombshell that it wants to exit the optical and carrier Ethernet markets and sell its Metro Ethernet Networks business.
