Metro Move for Infinera?

5:55 PM -- NEW YORK -- Ethernet Expo -- Is Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq: INFN) about to announce its move into the metro optical market?

That's the talk here in New York. Other optical vendors, many of whom are also very active in the carrier Ethernet space, believe Infinera is close to unveiling its metro platform roadmap, though it's unclear whether the photonic integrated chip (PIC) specialist has enlisted the help of a partner or done all the work itself inhouse.

It's only a matter of time before Infinera makes the move: The company's CEO, Jagdeep Singh, noted in July that it had a "number of developments" underway for the metro market. (See Infinera Surprises, Targets Metro Access.)

Given how Infinera has disrupted the long-haul WDM market during the past few years, there are quite a few metro optical firms waiting to see how the company will approach the metro market.

Infinera says it won't comment on any product developments before it makes an official announcement.

The company announces its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, October 21. Its stock rose by $0.50, more than 7 percent, today to $7.50.
