Boost for T-MPLS?

1:40 PM -- Regarded by many in the Ethernet community as a backwater technology, Transport Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), or T-MPLS, has been given at least a minor shot in the arm by NTT Group (NYSE: NTT).

The Japanese giant has struck a "collaborative agreement" with Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) -- one of a handful of vendors prepared to admit they still hang out with T-MPLS -- to do innovative stuff with "optical packet switching technologies." (See Bell Labs, NTT Collaborate.)

AlcaLu's Bell Labs and NTT's Photonics Labs plan to investigate (their word) various technologies, including "transport multi-protocol label switching (T-MPLS), the initial version of MPLS Transport."

Not wanting to limit its options, NTT is also checking out Provider Backbone Transport (PBT). (See NTT Joins PBT Roll Call.)

Word on the street has it that T-MPLS is due for a makeover and will emerge from the standards soup with a new name. Light Reading will be keeping an eye on any such developments.
