AlcaLu Plans to Break Optical Ground

8:10 AM -- Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) whet the appetite of the optical community today by announcing plans to unveil "groundbreaking technology in the next-generation intelligent optical core" during an online press conference on January 21.

AlcaLu claims its new optical technology will "significantly cut the cost of transporting dramatically increasing volumes of traffic with exceptional reliability."

It could, then, be the company's big OTN (Optical Transport Network) switching move that Light Reading uncovered last year, or the latest move in its broader efforts to converge the packet and optical domains. (See AlcaLu Preps New Optical Platform, AlcaLu Makes Its Packet-Optical Move , and AlcaLu Transforms the Core.)

Alcatel-Lucent is still generally regarded as the king of the optical equipment market, but some market watchers say it has already lost its crown to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. (See Huawei, ZTE Buck Optical Trend, Huawei Aims for Optical Crown, and Huawei Swipes Optical Market Share.)

AlcaLu, then, could do with proving its worth and showing off some (more) new developments and innovations as carriers look to future-proof their transport networks to cope with the ongoing dramatic rise in video and data traffic. (See AlcaLu Enhances 100-Gig and AlcaLu Claims Optical Record.)

Alcatel-Lucent plans to announce its latest development at 10 a.m. EST on January 21.
