Developing new productive forces for new electric power systems

Recently, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company, together with China Electric Power Research Institute, State Grid Electric Power Research Institute, and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., carried out research on the application of fine-grain Optical Transport Network (fgOTN) — the next-generation optical fiber communications technology. They built China's first fgOTN test ring network in China, with the teleprotection service ring network tested and verified first. The test results show that fgOTN meets the technical requirements of teleprotection services for fiber channels. This research is an important achievement made by State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company in exploring communications technologies during the construction of new electric power systems. It's also a crucial step in promoting the in-depth integration of expertise and technologies, and facilitating mutual development.
Evolving from the OTN standard system, fgOTN is approved by International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) as the next-generation transmission technology to replace SDH. fgOTN inherits some features of SDH and OTN, such as physical isolation for service channels, low latency, and zero interference. On top of these, fgOTN has improved existing networks to meet the communications requirements of large numbers of medium- and low-bandwidth services in new electric power systems, and can achieve 100G or higher transmission capability.
In recent years, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company has actively engaged in innovative practices in the construction of new electric power systems, accelerating the application and research of next-generation communications technologies. Liang Dong, deputy director of the digitalization and communications department of State Grid Jinan Power Supply Company, noted, "Power grid teleprotection services have high technical requirements on communications channels. In this case, it is of great significance to verify whether fgOTN can meet the requirements of production control services such as teleprotection for physical isolation, deterministic latency, and high reliability, so as to drive the technical evolution of power communications networks."
In the future, State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company will continue to innovate and research communications technologies, and explore fields such as backbone network fgOTN, physical isolation PON of power distribution networks, and next-generation HPLC. By doing so, the company expects to build a leading "smart power communications network" and accelerate the development of new productive forces in electric power communications, contributing to the company's high-quality development.
