Oplink Ships DWDM Platform
160-channel platform to build high-capacity subsystems for 1.6-Tbit/s fiber optic telecom systems
January 25, 2001
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Oplink Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: OPLK), designer and manufacturer of innovative optical components and integrated optical modules, today announced its 160-channel dense wavelength division multiplexer (DWDM) open platform. The DWDM platform is a complete set of modules and components necessary to build high-capacity subsystems for 1.6 terabit/s fiber optic telecommunications systems. It is available for order.
“Today’s fiber optic systems are being called on to carry greater and greater traffic,” said Fred Fromm, president of Oplink. “Our approach allows for flexibility in implementation of high-density optical systems, and carries with it significant economic advantages as well. For example, a system may be built with 40 channels initially and then expanded to 160 channels, as traffic dictates. Service providers can build their network with lower initial investments and increase their channel count simply by adding additional modules. This important advantage makes this approach an extremely cost-effective way to upgrade fiber optic transmission systems.”
