Omron Intros Optical Switch Components
Announces a new family of fiber-optic switching components
June 13, 2005
HOOFDORF, Netherlands -- Omron has announced a new family of fibre-optic switching components, offering reduced insertion loss and higher repeatability meeting the demanding applications of Ring Protect, Optical Add and Drop (OADM) and signal monitoring in Data and Telecommunication access networks.
The new devices are P1S12-B, P1S22-B and P1S18-B; 1x2, 2x2 and 1x8 Single Mode Optical Switches. Each utilises Omron’s innovative “Precisely Arrayed and Combined Solutions” (PACS) fine replication and micro optics technology, including a Micro Lens Array (MLA) for cost efficiency combined with very high performance.
Designed for the replacement of electric switches in access networks, the new P1S12-B/ P1S22-B feature a reduced typical insertion loss of just 0.8db, compared with 1.2/ 1.5dB previously. Other improvements include expansion of working wavelength ranges to 1290 – 1360nm and 1530 – 1625nm. Use of replicated parts including an innovative magnetic mechanism together with a “VW” mirror (prism) system has allowed Omron to realise a proven, high reliability optical switch in a package size just 31.6 (L) x 12.6 (W) x 8.4 (H) mm. Operating life has also been extended, with the components now rated for 10 million mechanical operations.
The Omron P1S18-B is one of the smallest of its type (93.5 (L) x 16 (W) x 8.5 (H) mm). Developed around an all-new purpose-made linear actuator coupled to a precisely aligned prism, it achieves a typical insertion loss of 2.0dB. An integrated calibration sensor tracks actuator function and together with a highly advanced latch system achieves fine mechanical adjustment whilst suppressing vibration effects. This in turn helps to maximise repeatable optical performance even in portable applications. P1S18B is specified for wavelengths between 1290 - 1360, 1530 - 1565, and 1625 – 1675 nm.
All 1x2 and 2x2 Switches are offered with bi-stable (latching feature) to minimise power consumption. Non-latching versions are also available on request at no additional cost. The 1x8 Switch has a bi-stable function.
