Movaz's integrated Wavelength Selective Switch crossconnects 2.5 and 10-Gbit/s wavelengths; Guy Gill joins Movaz as President and COO
March 13, 2002
ATLANTA -- Movaz Networks, a leading provider of optical networking solutions, announced today the launch of its integrated Wavelength Selective Switch (iWSS), an all-optical switching platform supporting hundreds of wavelengths with a 3D-MEMS-based switching fabric. The iWSS is an integral part of the Movaz RAY product portfolio enabling service providers to dynamically switch individual wavelengths across Metro Edge, Metro Access and Metro Core. An alpha version of the module will be unveiled at OFC 2002, showcasing the ability to cross-connect 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps wavelengths concurrently. Based on a uniquely patented design (filing date February 1997, issuance August 2000), Movaz's iWSS is a 7U-high device that fully integrates the three stages of wavelength de-multiplexing, multiplexing and switching into a single stage. Using revolutionary free space optics and 3D MEMS technology, Movaz has dramatically reduced the cost of all-optical switching as well as eliminated the extensive fiber management, power and space requirements of current generation of optical crossconnects. "The strategic partnerships we have established with Goodrich, which has over a decade of MEMS development and fabrication expertise, and Harris, a leader in precision optics, have enabled us to accomplish a new way of switching wavelengths," stated Bijan Khosravi, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Movaz Networks. "We have overcome the inherent design and cost limitations of the three-stage OXCs by eliminating the use of expensive electronics and to finally deliver the economics that make wavelength switching affordable everywhere in the network." Movaz will be demonstrating the iWSS at Booth # 4953 at OFC 2002.In a separate release: Movaz Networks, a leading provider of optical networking solutions for the Metro Edge, Metro Access and Metro Core, today announced the appointment of Guy Gill as President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Gill will be responsible for global operations and will lead Movaz through the revenue ramp cycle. Mr. Gill will report to Bijan Khosravi, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Movaz Networks. Mr. Gill comes to Movaz Networks after serving as Co-Founder, President and CEO of Elastic Networks, a leader in innovative, next-generation DSL technology and high-speed Internet access solutions. With proven leadership in the telecommunications and Internet industries and extensive RBOC experience, Mr. Gill is well poised to further expand Movaz’s leadership position in this market. “It is rare to find a company with disruptive technology that has been successfully executed into products. Movaz has not only done that in record time, but provides products with the economics that drives service providers business models," stated Guy Gill. “There is tremendous potential in the metro market for Movaz and I am excited to have the opportunity to drive that potential to the fullest.” Movaz Networks Inc.For more information on OFC 2002, please visit: www.nottheofc.com
