What Ericsson gets wrong in its doom-mongering about Europe's 5G
Europe's biggest 5G kit maker unsurprisingly thinks the world needs more 5G, but Europe does better on connectivity – if not tech – than Ericsson makes out.
In this edition of the Light Reading Extra podcast, the editors discuss subsea fiber trials, Genghis Khan and artificial Christmas trees.
Welcome to Light Reading Extra, a podcast where our editors go off-topic and talk about whatever we like including Dodgers fans and artificial Christmas trees.
Kelsey kicks off the discussion to share about a recent trial in Boston where Verizon completed a 1.6 terabit-per-second transmission of data in its live fiber network on a single-carrier wavelength using Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical solution. Verizon said optical advances like this are important to supporting AI technology.
Light Reading also recently had Keri Gilder, the CEO of Colt, on the podcast. Gilder discussed the completion of the first terabit wavelength transmission across the Atlantic via the Grace Hopper cable. The trial was completed together with Ciena's WaveLogic 6 technology.
Jeff discusses some updates from a Comcast and AWS cloud core deal and highlights from AT&T's investor day call. Mike shares why network traffic is still growing but at a slower pace and what that means for service providers.
The editors share a few fun facts such as why computer mouse speed is measured in "mickeys" and whether we think Jeff will be able to fix the lights on his pre-lit Christmas tree before the holidays… next year.
Mike is planning world domination based on his readings about conqueror Genghis Khan. We thought Khan used elephants in battle but some post-show research revealed the historical elephant rider was Hannibal, a Carthaginian general. It's a good thing we don't report on history.
We wrap up with our wildcard round of random news including activity in the smart TV OS market and OpenAI's "shipmas" product and feature release event.
