FREMONT, Calif. -- The IP/MPLS Forum announced todaythe approval of the first technical specification under its MPLS in MobileBackhaul Initiative (MMBI). The MPLS in Mobile Backhaul Networks:Framework and Requirements Technical Specification defines how MPLS canbe used to backhaul traffic for mobile operators.

Mobile backhaul networks have historically utilized TDM or ATM-basedbackhaul facilities to support revenue-generating and mission-critical serviceswhich are delay- and loss-sensitive and require a high level of networkavailability. Today’s Mobile Backhaul networks must support these legacyservices while also supporting the high-growth in demand for data servicesand bandwidth by today’s mobile subscribers.

In order to meet these evolutionary requirements of operators, the IP/MPLSForum’s MPLS in Mobile Backhaul Initiative (MMBI), which was announcedlast year, proposes a general framework for the use of MPLS technology totransport TDM, ATM, Ethernet and IP RAN backhaul traffic over convergedaccess, aggregation and core networks. The technical specification announced today provides a specific frameworkand set of requirements for the use of MPLS in the mobile wireless accessand aggregation networks across various RAN interfaces and technologies(e.g., GSM, UMTS, HSPA, LTE, mobile WiMAX, etc.).
